Malang Region of Ikatan Senat Mahasiswa Kedokteran Indonesia (ISMKI) (Senate of Indonesian Medical Student Association) was awarded as the best organizer in the Month of Service this April.
Months of service program began in 2014. The program aims to develop health education and try to improve public health to accomplish a better Indonesia. The theme in this year is Ophthalmology. The program related to this theme is:
– Eyeglass recycling and donation: a screening of vision, education, and merit used glasses donations.
– Assisting and give a sight: the treatment of cataracts,
– Child outreach and screening: Examinations of vision problems include myopia, hypermetropi, astigmatic, as well as color blindness and eye health supplements,
– School of Ophthalmology: educational activities that aim to explain the importance of eye health.
Month of Service conducted by the medical faculties that joined in ISMKI throughout Indonesia, facilitated by the National Executive Committee and Regional Community Development of ISMKI. The target of this program is the whole society ranging from toddlers, school age, reproductive age, and the elderly. The program is held in April until September 2015.
Members of ISMKI region IV who had the opportunity to implement Month of Service is the Faculty of medicine Universitas Brawijaya, Faculty of medicine of UMM, and Faculty of medicine of UNISMA. The chosen theme was “Assisting and give a sight”. Implementation of this service is in collaboration with PERDAMI (Association of Indonesian ophthalmologist)
In cataract prevention, PERDAMI also organizes social service to the community such as cataract surgery for the poor. This activity was coordinated by the Section of Cataract Blindness Prevention Perdami (SPBK) and other NGOs. In the period of 1987-present these activities have been conducted in various parts of Indonesia.
Collaboration between PERDAMI & ISMKI region 4 in the Month of Service and Charity is established by volunteer students from three institutions (Faculty of medicine Universitas Brawijaya, Faculty of medicine of UMM, and Faculty of medicine of UNISMA) to looking for patient with cataract presumption, then screened and operated by PERDAMI for free. The volunteers have been provided with training for cataract screening so that they can also carry out community service.
Due to the persistence and collaboration three institutions (Faculty of medicine Universitas Brawijaya, Faculty of medicine of UMM, and Faculty of medicine of UNISMA), ISMKI region of Malang awarded for Best Month of Service Operator in Indonesia from the division of ISMKI’s Community Empowerment. We hope that Month of Service will grow an develop, and the title of the Best Operator can be sustained.
