Education and economic factors are still believed to be the main causes of early marriages and high divorce rates, particularly in the Malang Regency. This is based on the data showing high rates of early marriages and divorces in one of the villages in the Malang Regency, namely Kendalpayak Village, Pakisaji.
Observing the numerous cases related to early marriages and high divorce rates in the village, the Department of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Brawijaya (FMUB) conducted a series of community service activities themed “Strategies for Preventing Early Marriages through Training on the Utilization of Used Materials,” which took place on Saturday, July 13, at the Kendalpayak Village Hall, Pakisaji District, Malang Regency.
Dr. apt. Anisyah Achmad, S.Si., Sp.FRS, the Chairperson of the community service activity, stated in an interview that this initiative is an effort to prevent early marriages, which have severely detrimental effects on individuals, families, and society. Early marriages lead to school dropouts, increased risks of domestic violence, higher economic burdens, mental health issues between couples, and even divorce. The series of community service activities also included religious education on the vulnerabilities and risks associated with early marriages and divorces, as well as health education on the impacts of early marriages and the health risks of teenage pregnancies. Additionally, the educational activities were followed by creative training sessions, such as making Macrame Plant Hangers from used materials like 1.5-liter mineral water bottles, supported by the Upload DIY Malang Team.
It is hoped that this activity can enhance knowledge, self-confidence, and good social relationships among teenagers who have experienced early marriages or divorce. The Kendalpayak youth are encouraged to use their time productively to meet their own needs, as well as those of their families and the community. (an4nk- FMUB Public Relation)
