What is the Impact of Bullying on Children?

Nowadays people need to be aware of the changes that occur in the psychology and behavior of children. This is due to several factors, including bullying in children, where aggressive behavior is carried out by a person or group of people involving an “unbalance of power” between the perpetrator and the victim, where the behavior is done repeatedly. This was conveyed by a pediatrician FMUB/RSSA who focuses on the child’s growth and development, dr. Ariani, M.Kes, Sp.A., in a live activity on the official Instagram account (IG) of the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI) @Idai_ig Tanya IDAI on IG Live with the theme “The Impact of Bullying on Children” which was held on Tuesday afternoon, 2 August 2022.

As conveyed by Dr. Ariani, several indications that we need to be aware of if our children become victims of bullying include the reluctance of children to be involved in social activities such as school, taking part in tutoring activities, withdrawing from friendships both at school and in the environment around where they live and so on. other. So this FMUB alumni added that several suggestions were addressed to the school to make a good program for prevention efforts, and to build effective communication between students and teachers, especially during the pandemic for the last 2 years. Thus, it can be known whether there are problems or early detection of bullying itself, creating a school that is comfortable, safe, and friendly for children, providing assistance and consulting assistance with counseling teachers or school committees. However, prevention efforts that can be done by the school will be maximized if there is special and more attention from parents or family and the environment, said the lecturer who currently serves on IDAI’s Child Protection Task Force.

The average cause or risk factor is a permissive family, there is physical and verbal violence at home so children do not know what good parenting looks like. In addition, the presence of peers who become cheerleaders who eventually become gangsters, and the mass media make it easier to access spectacle and scenes of violence that affect the mindset of children and adolescents are also contributing factors. She suggested communicating with children, listening to children’s complaints, taking them seriously but don’t intimidate, even pressuring or scolding children, making sure that you are there to help solve problems, and giving support to children.

Finally, dr. Ariani explained that bullying is subjective which can interfere with adaptability and the problems being faced. If this is deemed very detrimental, you can consult with the school or professionals such as doctors, psychiatrists, or psychologists, or to the nearest health, legal, or social service center such as a health center/hospital, nearest police station, counseling agency, KemenPPPA hotline number 129 Whatsapp (WA) 08111129129, Children’s Social Service Telephone (TEPSA) 1500-771, psychological service SEJIWA Hotline      119     ext       8, complaints on http://kemdikbud.lapor.go.id.
