Basic Health Research in 2007 showed that the prevalence of cancer in Indonesia was 430 per 100,000 population. Data from the Indonesian Oncology Association (POI) reported that in 2005 there were 7 million deaths from 11 million people diagnosed with cancer (Case Fatality Rate 63.63%).
One type of cancer that has increased the number of incidents is leukemia. The cancer is characterized by the accumulation of abnormal white blood cells in the bone marrow and most commonly encountered in children is about 30-40% of all cancers in children and the highest incidence occurs in patients with age between 3-6 years. Leukemia that occurs in general is acute leukemia which consists of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and Acute Mieloblastic Leukemia (AML). Approximately 80% of acute leukemia in children is ALL and the rest is mostly AML (Rudolph, 2007).
Considering the high potential and increasing of Leukemia in Indonesia, the Doctoral Program of Medical Science (PSDIK) Faculty of Medicine Universitas Brawijaya (FKUB) carried out a community service activity by conducting a training named “Sampling Handling And Phenotyping Interpretation for Leukemia Diagnosis In Improving Quality Of Medical On Service Health In East Java “.
The training is divided into two different group of participants. The first group was medical analysts who had a training on Wednesday, 25 January 2017. The second training, conducted on 1 February 2017, the target was medical practitioners, such as general practitioners and specialists.
Agustina Tri Endharti, SSi. Ph.D as Chief Executive of PSDIK Community Service – FKUB said that the purpose of this activity is to increase the ability of medical personnel in the handling and interpretation of phenotyping results for the diagnosis of Leukemia using flow cytometry as an effort to improve the quality of health service. In addition, she also added that PDIK wants to contribute to improve the knowledge of health workers (GPs and Specialists) on interpretation of phenotyping results for Leukemia diagnosis, so it is hoped that this activity can provide cooperation opportunities with local hospitals.
Meanwhile, Head of Doctoral Program of Medical Science (PSDIK) FKUB, Prof. Dr. dr. Kusworini, M. Kes, SpPK explained the PSDIK wants to contribute to overcome the problem of detection of cancer cells especially for East Java region. It is expected that through the improvement of the competency of health workers like this, health facilities can provide standardized services. The standard contains the competence of personnel involved in medical laboratory examinations, facilities, reagents and equipments, pre-examination factors, inspections, quality assurance considerations, and post-examination factors.
The speaker on 25 January 2017 was dr. Maimun ZA, SpPK with material “Handling leukemia samples (take-delivery) and I Ketut Suprayogi, Amd (BD) with material “Sampling technique of phlebotomy”. On 1 February, the speaker was Agustina Tri Endharti, Ph.D (FKUB) with the material “Basic Flow cytometry related to Immunophenotyping”, dr.Maimun ZA, MKes. SpPK with the material “Leukemia Case in RSSA”, Dr. dr. Yetti Hernaningsih , Sp.PK (RSUD dr.Sutomo Surabaya) with material “Leukemia BD OneFlow and Clinical Diagnostic application.”
