New Batch of Co-Assistants Handover: Be the future doctors who can achieve professional competence and stay safe in the pandemic era

The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Brawijaya, has performed the virtual handover of 173 new co-assistants (co-asst.) to the Director of Saiful Anwar Hospital Malang and the Education Coordination Committee of the Faculty of Medicine on Friday (23/4/21).

Dr. Dearisa Surya Yudhantara, Sp. KJ, as the Head of the Profession Study Program, said, “This morning we gathered to perform the virtual handover of co-assistant doctors at RSSA Malang as the primary educational hospitals for co-assistants (co-asst.).”

He added, “We need to inform you that professional education this time is very different. During the Covid-19 pandemic, it seems that there is a need to facilitate the co-assistants. One hundred seventy-three new co-assistants will undergo a new stage, and there will be two handover ceremonies following the FMUB academic calendar. I hope the co-assistants will get useful knowledge from professional education.”

On the same occasion, the Dean of FMUB, Dr. dr. Wisnu Barlianto, MSi., Med., SpA (K), in his speech, congratulated all of the co-assistants, who have completed their undergraduate medical education and enhancement, and will begin the professional education stage at RSSA and other hospitals. He advises all medical students to act professionally, work on and treat patients according to their competence and there is a willingness to learn continuously.

According to him, this professional education is the final touch of the education process to become a medical professional. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there is little difference in its implementation and grouping (online-offline). So, the co-assistants have to be very careful in treating patients and learn more.

The Dean also expressed his gratitude to the Director of RSSA, who has facilitated many co-assistants. It is hoped that the co-assistants can achieve their competence. Besides, the lecturers in all laboratory departments are expected to guide the students despite their busy schedules to help realize the students’ competence.

The Deputy Director of Education and Professional Development at RSSA, Dr. dr. Moch. Bachtiar Budianto, SpB. Onk (K) said the learning process during the pandemic will be conducted online and offline considering the target competence and safety. There is no need to feel discouraged when facing the actual condition in the field.

The co-assistants have been facilitated by the Dean and Head of Study Program to create a competency system that must be performed. However, safety still becomes the priority during the pandemic that declines in trend. From the 300 – 400 beds prepared at RSSA, only 60 beds are for Covid patients. Again, the co-assistants must follow the health protocols and keep a distance from PPDS and others.

The Chairman of the Education Coordination Committee, dr. Badrul Munir, SpS (K), also congratulated the co-assistants who have been accepted in RSSA. He hoped that they remain alert, learn independently, and be mature in learning, finding out, and being active while learning. Theory can be read in books, but the practice comes from will and intention. So that later on, they will become competent doctors, the Indonesian people are waiting for your role as health service providers. (An4nk – FKUB Public Relations)
