FMUB Shows Support for Flash Floods Victims in Malang

The flash flood disaster that struck around the Brantas Watershed (DAS) in Batu City on Wednesday afternoon (4/11/21) last week also impacted the people who live on the banks of the Brantas watershed in Malang City.

In response to the disaster, the Academic Community of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Brawijaya, supports the victims of flash floods around the Klojen area, precisely in the evacuation of residents of Kampung Putih (Rampal Celaket) Klojen Sub-District, Malang City.

The distribution of aid from FMUB Cares for Flash Flood Disasters was initiated by the FMUB Research and Community Service Agency (BPPM) and carried out at the Senaputra shelter, Malang City, on Sunday morning (7/11/21).

The Head of the Disaster and Emergency Team of Universitas Brawijaya, dr. Aurick Yudha Nagara, Sp.EM, in his report, said we met in order to strengthen each other, especially for residents affected by the flash flood. Here we are here as representatives of the academic community of FMUB, Universitas Brawijaya, and neighbors of the residents of RSSA.

In our opinion, this is actually our obligation as a higher education institution with a health cluster to respond to this disaster. We also must jointly help meet the needs of our brothers and sisters who become disaster victims.

Furthermore, he also reported to the officials that the team has also provided assistance to strengthen health posts since Thursday. Some colleagues also assist us. They are from the Health Officer and the Health Center from several areas such as Arjuna, Rampal Celaket, and Bareng, staff from Arjuna Health Center are on duty.

“During these two days we have treated as many as 27 patients; hopefully, it will decrease (on the first day 15 and the second day 12 people) and indeed for direct indications of disaster disease we have only found 2 cases (already handled by a mental illness specialist because there is one resident of the village) who almost drowned and experienced trauma. The hope is that this disaster will pass soon and return to normal again. The most important thing is that there will be no new Covid clusters. Besides, the Kedung Kandang health center will also be there to help, “he explained.

On the same occasion, the Dean of FMUB, Dr. dr. Wisnu Barlianto, MSi., Med., SpA (K), who was present in his speech, also said, thank God, this time we can gather here to provide aid for flood handling posts in Malang.

Furthermore, FMUB does have a disaster preparedness program, which is routine; every time there is a disaster, we are here to support and help victims of natural disasters. Maybe this is the next start we will coordinate regarding what needs to be done, related to row modeling later and handling children because children are not adults. Later there will be assistance from a child development specialist, namely dr. Ariani, MKes SpA(K) and team.

Hopefully, our assistance, although not much, can at least help lift the spirit to work together to help the future of our fellow nation’s children. This is our responsibility as a medical-based campus in Malang City. Hopefully, the assistance we provide can be helpful for others.

In response to this, representatives of the Flood Victims Handling Post in Senaputra, Malang City, said that we are very grateful for the support given by FMUB to the victims. The posts are prepared in several locations such as Flamboyan, Penanggungan, Oro-oro Dowo, Klojen, Polehan and the existing Brantas watershed. Alhamdulilah, there have been no casualties until now, only the physical damage to the building that the volunteer team has cleaned.

As stated by the Dean, the real problem is the elderly and children, where the elderly are approaching old age. These children will be affected more or less by their growth and development because they are victims of this flash flood disaster.

At our post, there are approximately 390 people: Male = 38 people, Female= 130 people, 18 boys, ten girls, five toddlers, one male with disabilities, two women with disabilities, and one breastfeeding mother.

Once again, we thank FMUB for its concern and assistance. If there is any need, we are ready to coordinate here, he added.

In this activity, the Dean of FKUB also had the opportunity to review the shelter camps and talk with volunteers and victims. Besides the Dean, the representatives from FMUB were Dean’s wife, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Prof. dr. M. Saifur Rahman, SpJP (K ), Ph.D. (along with his wife), Vice-dean for Student Affairs, dr. Eriko Prawestiningtyas, Sp.F, Head of BPPM Dr. Husnul Khotimah, S.Si. M.Kes, dr. Ariani, MKes, SpA(K), dr.
