FMUB Applies Inter Professional Education (IPE) as a Compulsory Subject

Faculty of Medicine Universitas Brawijaya is one elements of education in the field of Medical and Health Sciences in Indonesia. As a provider of education that produces health professionals, this campus holds the largest number of study programs in Universitas Brawijaya

The multi-profession collaboration in the field of health has been applied in FMUB, by implementing Inter-Professional Education (IPE) as a compulsory subject for its students. The application has been approved by the Dean by implementing  a Compulsory Curriculum with Students Field Practice (PKNM) that accounts for 3 credits with the policy that must be followed by all students from 5 Undergraduate Programs (Medical Education, Nursing, Nutrition, Midwifery and Pharmacy).

The reason of the implementation of this program is that the Education of Health Professionals in Indonesia at this time is growing rapidly and making a very significant change compared with the previous conditions. Various changes occur following the needs and challenges of local, national and global communities.

IPE itself is a effort that is promotive, preventive, curative, rehabilitative in health services. According to WHO IPE is one of the concepts of  integrated education and learning. It also promotes collaboration among learners who have competencies interconnected and  different educational backgrounds, studying together over a period of time as a step towards improving the quality of health services.

IPE has been developed extensively in various state-developed countries such as Canada, Britain, Japan, Thailand, the Philippines and Hong Kong. In Indonesia it has been running in the past few years. FMUB also makes the activity become one of compulsory subjects in semester 7 of 3 credits. With the PKNM FMUB students are required to be able to carry out the practice of collaboration among professions (IPE) in order to seek health care problems in the community to then be solved comprehensively and strategically in Sub-districts that have agreement with FMUB. It is expected that this introduction is in line with the function of Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (the three pillars of higher education) and produces professional health workers with sufficient knowledge, attitude and skills for facing the dynamics and  challenges of health problems.

The Dean of FKUB Dr. dr. Sri Andarini, M.Kes  calls for collaboration among the students at the opportunity . She wants no gap between Medical Education students, Nursing, Nutrition, Midwifery and Pharmacy. “We hope all students who will take part in PKNM can collaborate and maintain FMUB’s good name in the community, “he said.

Furthermore, the former Vice Dean I also added, “This is your first contact with the community, there have been some briefing about IPE that had been given. There is no  gap among all health professions. We hope all can be partners, so in practice if possible 5 study programs  can participate in it, if that is not possible, at least 3 study programs can join. Who’s the leader? Stay on portions of each partner and work for human benefits. When you are in the field if you want to do research or ask questions please see the time and conditions, obey all the rules that apply. Keep the courtesy, and maintain the name of our alma mater.

Meanwhile, Vice Dean for Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. dr. Yuyun Yueniwati, P.W. M.Kes, SpRad (K) in her interview session with FMUB Public Relations added “PKNM will be divided into several groups. 10 students from all S1 (undergraduate) programs will be in one working group, and for each village there will be about 4 groups. The time provided  to all FKUB students is flexible accounting for doing 10 visits.
