On Tuesday (6/10) at the Senate Chamber of the Faculty of Medicine, the Task Force Team for Pain & Palliative Care Center, Faculty of Medicine Universitas Brawijaya (FKUB/FMUB) has the opportunity to welcome the visit of expert Hoogenhout Jacob, MD, PHD of Nijmegen University (Netherlands).
During his visit, Jacob Hoogenhout, MD, PHD in an expert lecture before students of specialist program presented “Cancer Care”.
The event was held in order to have a better understanding of the sensation of pain as well as an effort to control or reduce the level of pain that has always been an important aspect of medical treatment.
In practice, the pain is a common medical problem. Even sometimes a major complaint that makes patients comes to see the doctor.
Based on existing data, 9 out of 10 people in the United States regularly experience pain. Each year, 25 million people in the United States experience acute pain due to trauma or surgery, and 50 million people experience chronic pain.
Chronic pain is the most common cause of disability in the long term, and nearly a third of people in the US experience severe chronic pain in his lifetime.
Another problem is the fact that often the inadequate treatment of pain. Inadequate treatment can result in losses to pain physically, psychologically and financially. An understanding of the mechanisms of pain can improve the quality of treatment of pain. Pain itself has long been a subject that is difficult to understand.
However, the current understanding of pain has been revolutionized. Initially the definition of pain just focuses on the sensation caused by an injury or illness. It has now expanded with a more complex explanation of the process and includes emotional and cognitive dimensions in addition to sensory.
In this event FMUB seeks to establish and develop the Task Force Team for Pain & Palliative Care Center at the FMUB; therefore, the FMUB invites a pain expert Jaap Hoogenhout, MD, PHD of Nijmegen University (Netherlands).
The activities in this event include lectures, discussions, and question and answer session, aimed at improving the knowledge management of pain of the Task Force Team for Pain & Palliative Care Center, FMUB and improving the knowledge of pain management for students of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Brawijaya with a specific target on the Task Force Team , teaching staffs and medical specialist students
